Mulford kicks out at Cairns in BSN battle

REDCAR’S Jake Mulford KICKED OUT at rival Will Cairns in a feisty start line clash at Poole.

The pair had a coming together and then verbals during the BSN Series Final between Poole and Redcar at Wimborne Road on Wednesday night.

Mulford became angry after Cairns moved across his starting grid as they prepared for Heat 8.

The former World Under-23 Longtrack Champion, then kicked Cairns’ bike as it encroached his position.

In retaliation, the Pirates kid Cairns pulled out Mulford’s ignition cut-out string that immediately stalls the bike. Mulford then had to re-start his bike before the race.

Cairns went onto the win the race for the Pirates and it was a turning point in the meeting, Poole going onto win 52-38 and win the trophy 94-86 on aggregate.

Mulford said afterwards: “It’s just classic Will every meeting. He’s always coming across your gate and chirping. Today was in my gate and he should be in his gate. Just trying to get him out of the way.”

Cairns hit out saying that Mulford was just jealous after he replaced him as a Rising Star at Premiership club Belle Vue at the start of the year.

He added: “He’s probably just salty I stole his job at Belle Vue. It is what it is.

“I felt like it was just one of them things. I actually was a bit confused really. He pulled up and I’ve got a 90 kilo bike, I can’t pack where I want my bike to be.

“I put my bike to the left and next minute he’s f*****g, sorry, getting up in all my face and stuff.

“So I pulled his cut out and he had to push the bike. It fired me up. Well you saw who won the battle.

“The boys flicked a switch and we just need to keep level-headed now.”

Cooper Rushen secured the aggregate success by winning the penultimate race.

Pirates manager Neil Middleditch said: “Early doors we just didn’t seem to have that much fire in us. I had a chat with them and Zach (Cook) was screaming at them being the captain, and just saying we need to get some guts going, and they responded brilliantly.

“We got there in the end, but fair play to Redcar for a fantastic performance. My boys were brilliant and big up to Havvy (Gary Havelock) who has been a big part of this trophy win. I’m very, very pleased.”

Bears boss Gavin Parr said: “To get them to Heat 14, I can’t ask for much more from most of them. They’ve all given a good shift and put in 110 per cent.

“Unfortunately as we knew from the start Poole are excellent, they’re a brilliant team and they’re not where they are for nothing.

“I think we caused them a few little heartaches at times, and the palpitations were going, so we can hold our heads up high and have given them a really good battle.”
