Redcar admit they are "underdogs" before title defence

22 Sep 2026 | 11:16

REDCAR boss Gavin Parr admits his side are “underdogs” as they bid to defend their BSN Series title.

The Bears take on Poole at the Ecco Arena tonight in the first leg of the BSN Final, a repeat of last year’s showdown, live on BSN (7pm).

Just under a year ago, the Bears produced a stunning result as having been held to a narrow 46-44 advantage at the Ecco Arena they took the silverware with a 45-45 draw in the second leg at Wimborne Road.

The hosts are at full strength and welcome back newly crowned British Under-19 champion Jody Scott, whilst the Pirates go into the first leg without reserve Slater Lightcap who suffered a hand injury at Edinburgh last Friday. Jordy Loftus steps in to guest at No.6.

Parr admits: “We did it last year. This year we are very much the underdogs but one thing is certain, the lads will all give it everything and try and bring the trophy home one more time.”

Bears know they need to build up a decent lead to take to fortress Wimborne Road on Wednesday night for the second leg.

Key reserve Ace Pijper said: “It’s going to be tough. Poole are a very good side and especially at their place.

“So we have to do a good job at Redcar tonight and take the biggest lead we can.”

Poole No.1 Richard Lawson said: “I’m looking forward to the finals this week. I think that it is going to be tough. They are going well, they have got good riders.

“But I do think that over two legs we are better than all the teams in the league, so I think we can do it.”
